Orange Cinnamon Slow Cooked Ribs
Paleo and AIP Full Of Flavor Slow Cooked Pork Ribs
These Orange Cinnamon Slow Cooked Ribs are a sweet and sticky combination of balsamic vinegar, orange juice, cinnamon and honey. They are slow cooked on the stove top in a pot with a lid at low heat for about 5 to 6 hours. The ribs are first fried with onions added until they start to brown and caramelize and infuse the ribs with the browned onions flavor and sweetness. If you want to cook these on your slow cooker, you’ll still need to first use a different pot on the stove top to brown the ribs and onions before transferring them to your slow cooker.
Orange Cinnamon Slow Cooked Ribs Recipe
- 10 to 12 single pork ribs
- 4 tablespoons orange juice ( for cooking the ribs)
- 1 tablespoon orange juice (for glaze)
- half a teaspoon orange zest
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 1 medium onion, diced
- a quarter teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 cups broth or stock of choice
- 5 cups water
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil of your choice
- salt to taste
Using a pot with a lid, add cooking oil and fry the ribs until they start to go golden brown, for about 6 to 8 minutes.
Add the onions and fry until they also start to go golden brown, for about 4 minutes.
Add the orange zest, cinnamon powder and three quarters of the orange zest and season with salt and mix.
Fry for a further minute and add in the orange juice and stock and bring to a simmer.
If using a slow cooker transfer the contents to the slow cooker and add the 5 cups of water.
If using the stove top add the water and lower the heat to a medium to low heat, where the pot is simmering slowly.
Cook for about 5 to 6 hours, adding more water if you need to.
Towards the end cook and reduce until the amount of fluid left is below the ribs.
In a pan start the glaze by mixing 1 tablespoon of orange juice the zest of the orange and honey with the sauce from cooking the ribs.
Mix and toss in the ribs, and simmer for a minute then take off the heat.
Leave the ribs sit for about 5 minutes so the flavors infuse before serving.
Garnish with more orange zest if you prefer.
