The combination of cinnamon and orange juice in this Orange Cinnamon Carnitas Style Pork recipe makes a tasty pork dish you can easily have with any vegetable side. The pork has been cooked at high heat in under 2 hours, but you can easily cook this in a slow cooker as well. Pork shoulder has been used and it’s simply seasoned with cinnamon, orange juice, onion, garlic and salt.
Orange Cinnamon Carnitas Style Pork Recipe
300 to 400 grams pork shoulder, 1 heaped teaspoon cinnamon, 2 large oranges, 1 medium onion, 3 cloves garlic, salt to taste, 1 cup bone broth of choice, 2 cups water, 2 tablespoons cooking oil of choice, fresh herbs of choice to garnish
Trim off the fat on the pork and set it aside, then dice the pork into cubes.
Chop the onions, dice the garlic and squeeze the oranges to make a cup or a bit more orange juice.
In a pot add the pork fat trimmings and cook at medium heat for about 3 minutes until the solid fat starts to melt and releases enough fat to start cooking the onions
Add the onions and cook until they turn translucent.
Add the garlic and cook for a further minute or two
Add the pork, cinnamon, salt and orange juice and mix
Add the broth and water and cover with a lid.
Turn the heat up and leave it cook at high heat until the liquid runs out of the meat.
Once all the liquid is cooked off, take off the heat and leave it cool down. Taste and add more salt if needed.
In a non stick type of a pan heat up the cooking oil and transfer the meat to the pan and fry until it gets to your preferred level of crispiness. You can do this in batches if your pan is not wide enough.
Once it’s cooked take off the heat and garnish with herbs of your choice.
